Reader! How were your last 2 weeks? The mad dash before summer unofficially came to a close? We madly dashed on our last Savor Food and Body Adventure, for sure. With only a mile and a half from camp after an epic day of hiking along a rolling ridge, followed by a steep descent into the valley below, and a final 2000+ foot ascent to our camp for the night, the rain started. Slowly at first. Then bigger drops to the point it was time to put on rain gear. Thunder rolled in. Then CRACK! Lighting. My hiking partners weren't convinced we were on the “rain shadow” side of the Olympic Peninsula. Are we really doing this for 8 days?!?! “Did you bring ground cloths?” I ask as we search for a dry-ish campsite. Nope. “We never hike with them at home. It’s usually dry enough!” I learned, after 15 years of backpacking in Washington State, that a ground cloth under your tent is essential to keep gear and clothes dry, protect your tent, and keep a smile on your face in the backcountry. Kind of like gentle nutrition is essential to a healthy relationship with food and your body after 40 - especially when Mother Nature throws perimenopause curveballs. Gentle nutrition doesn’t need to be complicated4-ish minute video How to make The Bike Guy’s advice on gentle nutrition work for you. Watch your inbox on Thursdays over the next few weeks. "I'm a walking osteoporosis disaster," Sharon said "I'm 51, have a small frame, and don't love eating Greek yogurt all the time. I'm doomed to get osteoporosis for sure!" Bone health is no joke for those of us over 40. Me too! I'm currently digging through the research for answers to salvage my osteopenic bones. Social media makes it sound like you're doomed if you aren't on hormone replacement therapy for whatever reason. Or that you'll be frail and incapable of carrying groceries at 75 if...
"Well, it was surprising," Anne said when I asked her what wins she’d had since our last session. "When I stopped taking the GLP-1 medication, I expected the food noise to come flooding back, and it did, which is why I reached out to you. I was terrified of my cravings!" "But working together taught me to have permission and balance with food. My cravings don’t control me anymore - or at least they're not as loud." Hi Reader, Anne and I met a few months ago. She said she needed "structure...
When's the last time you felt comfortable naked in front of someone, Reader? If you said never, I get it! I didn't use to be comfortable naked in front of my partner either, until recently. Two years ago, I told The Bike Guy to keep the lights on as I slipped off my clothes, bra, and underwear. This is NOT a weight loss success story. It's a body image story in progress. At the height of my dieting days, I had a lot of body shame. I told myself, "Your thighs are too thick. Your stomach is too...
