Reader! How were your last 2 weeks? The mad dash before summer unofficially came to a close? We madly dashed on our last Savor Food and Body Adventure, for sure. With only a mile and a half from camp after an epic day of hiking along a rolling ridge, followed by a steep descent into the valley below, and a final 2000+ foot ascent to our camp for the night, the rain started. Slowly at first. Then bigger drops to the point it was time to put on rain gear. Thunder rolled in. Then CRACK! Lighting. My hiking partners weren't convinced we were on the “rain shadow” side of the Olympic Peninsula. Are we really doing this for 8 days?!?! “Did you bring ground cloths?” I ask as we search for a dry-ish campsite. Nope. “We never hike with them at home. It’s usually dry enough!” I learned, after 15 years of backpacking in Washington State, that a ground cloth under your tent is essential to keep gear and clothes dry, protect your tent, and keep a smile on your face in the backcountry. Kind of like gentle nutrition is essential to a healthy relationship with food and your body after 40 - especially when Mother Nature throws perimenopause curveballs. Hi Reader! Do you know what the #1 behavior is when you stop dieting and start intuitive eating? Fuckit eating. You've done it. I've done it. Maybe you're still doing it. Why? Because when we spend more years following food rules than trusting our bodies, we see a pan of pizza and think... "Too many carbs" We see a pint of ice cream, and think... "Too much sugar" and "Too much fat." When we desperately want our favorite blue corn tortilla chips from Trader Joe's, we think......
"This is terrifying. I didn't think it was going to be like this." Jenn said as we peered over the edge of another cliff. We were halfway down a nearly 4000-foot descent from a remote lake most hikers don’t venture to. Smart. We thought our route down would be cruisy through a gentle-ish valley. Instead, we didn't trust our instincts and followed 3 gym bros down a more direct route. This left us triggering rock slides, clinging to granite walls, and removing leg hairs by butt-sliding down...
How's your summer so far, Reader? “I thought I was going to have all this time off to eat healthy and work out consistently this summer, but THAT hasn’t happened. Summer is chaotic around here - it’s good chaos, but I need to get back on track. I want some better habits going into the fall when I go back to teaching - a different kind of chaos.” This was Mel’s answer to the question above. Her good kind of chaos involved a family trip to Colorado, with mountain biking, easy rock climbs with...
