how not to sleep in a puddle

Reader!

How were your last 2 weeks? The mad dash before summer unofficially came to a close?

We madly dashed on our last Savor Food and Body Adventure, for sure.

With only a mile and a half from camp after an epic day of hiking along a rolling ridge, followed by a steep descent into the valley below, and a final 2000+ foot ascent to our camp for the night, the rain started.

Slowly at first. Then bigger drops to the point it was time to put on rain gear. Thunder rolled in. Then CRACK! Lighting.

My hiking partners weren't convinced we were on the “rain shadow” side of the Olympic Peninsula. Are we really doing this for 8 days?!?!

“Did you bring ground cloths?” I ask as we search for a dry-ish campsite.

Nope. “We never hike with them at home. It’s usually dry enough!”

I learned, after 15 years of backpacking in Washington State, that a ground cloth under your tent is essential to keep gear and clothes dry, protect your tent, and keep a smile on your face in the backcountry.

Kind of like gentle nutrition is essential to a healthy relationship with food and your body after 40 - especially when Mother Nature throws perimenopause curveballs.

“I just don't have the motivation to make healthy meals,” Kate said. ”Well, that’s not true. I want to eat more vegetables and cook at home. But when I buy fresh vegetables, they go bad before I get around to eating them.” ”Salads aren’t satisfying unless they have some protein on them, and I don’t have the motivation or time to cook the chicken, or fish, or tofu to put on the salad.” “So, having prepared foods like grilled chicken or fish, baked tofu, or canned beans on hand would make...

“I feel like my metabolism is broken,” Liz said on our discovery call last week ”Say more,” I said ”Well, since I turned 49 last fall, it doesn’t matter what I eat or don’t eat, or how much I exercise or don’t exercise, I keep gaining weight,” she said ”I’ve tried different diets over the years. Some worked better than others, but nothing works now. The weight doesn’t budge.” ”You feel like your metabolism is broken because it seems like your body doesn’t burn calories like it used to?” I...

How do you deal with change, NAME? Are you an emotional eater when it comes to change? I am, and so's Erin. "I eat when I'm bored with life or life is changing in ways I don't like," Erin said That's her biggest nutrition concern at 47 and why she ended up in my online office. "I eat when I'm happy, sad, to please other people (food pushers)…all the reasons, and all the foods I shouldn't eat." What's the deal with emotional eating? Is it bad? Should you roll with it? Honestly, life and body...
