âI feel like my metabolism is broken,â Liz said on our discovery call last week âSay more,â I said âWell, since I turned 49 last fall, it doesnât matter what I eat or donât eat, or how much I exercise or donât exercise, I keep gaining weight,â she said âIâve tried different diets over the years. Some worked better than others, but nothing works now. The weight doesnât budge.â âYou feel like your metabolism is broken because it seems like your body doesnât burn calories like it used to?â I asked Liz thought for a minute. âYeah. My body feels stuck.ââ Hey Reader! Are you feeling like Liz, too? Weight gain during late perimenopause and early menopause is common for 85% of women. However, the research doesnât explain why some women gain an average of 5-10 pounds in the 5-7 years of the menopause transition, and other women gain 15+ pounds overnight; at least thatâs what it feels like. Who's to blame? Hormones, metabolism, dieting, life, or all of the above? A handful of colleagues and I dove into the research during a recent journal club call. Itâs like a book club, but with scientific papers. Hereâs the take-home message⌠Eat enough. Move your body most days (consistency matters for metabolism!). Get adequate sleep most nights. Cope with stress. Stay hydrated. And your metabolism will be stable through menopause.â In fact, most adults have a stable metabolism until they're at least 60 years old. This review paper is a good summary of the dynamics of metabolism. What's this look like in real life? Keep food simple. Donât get caught in the complicated anti-aging weeds created by social media influencers. Remember the advice from The Bike Guy, âshow up, think about it, and give a sh*t.â If you get tripped up on the 'think about it' part, you're not alone. You and 95% of the women I work with were told for decades to "eat this, donât eat that. Eat at these times, but not between these times." What happens when youâre tired of following these rules? Or when you get overwhelmed by all the âshoulds?â You think, "I should eat more vegetables. I should eat more protein. I shouldnât eat processed food. I shouldnât eat sugar. I should cook more from scratch." â You've been wired to think this way. Diet culture's entire business model is built on you not knowing how to âthink about it.â Letâs change that! Doors open for the Gentle Nutrition Made Easy online group counseling program on June 18! I haven't offered this program in the summer before. But enough of you have asked about it, so here we go! Donât miss this opportunity to apply the Gentle Nutrition 4-step framework to your everyday life.

Hi Reader! Do you know what the #1 behavior is when you stop dieting and start intuitive eating? Fuckit eating. You've done it. I've done it. Maybe you're still doing it. Why? Because when we spend more years following food rules than trusting our bodies, we see a pan of pizza and think... "Too many carbs" We see a pint of ice cream, and think... "Too much sugar" and "Too much fat." When we desperately want our favorite blue corn tortilla chips from Trader Joe's, we think......
"This is terrifying. I didn't think it was going to be like this." Jenn said as we peered over the edge of another cliff. We were halfway down a nearly 4000-foot descent from a remote lake most hikers donât venture to. Smart. We thought our route down would be cruisy through a gentle-ish valley. Instead, we didn't trust our instincts and followed 3 gym bros down a more direct route. This left us triggering rock slides, clinging to granite walls, and removing leg hairs by butt-sliding down...
How's your summer so far, Reader? âI thought I was going to have all this time off to eat healthy and work out consistently this summer, but THAT hasnât happened. Summer is chaotic around here - itâs good chaos, but I need to get back on track. I want some better habits going into the fall when I go back to teaching - a different kind of chaos.â This was Melâs answer to the question above. Her good kind of chaos involved a family trip to Colorado, with mountain biking, easy rock climbs with...
